    Burberry Landscapes
Introducing the latest iteration of our Burberry Landscapes series, which sees immersive earth works created in collaboration with our global creative community. An ode to our past, present and future, this time we journey to South Africa and the Canary Islands where two unique landscapes are transformed with renditions of the Burberry Check – each naturally crafted and carefully removed to leave no mark.

    Elsie’s Voyage
Inspired by the voyages of adventurer Elsie Burberry, founder Thomas Burberry’s daughter-in-law, the volcanic ground of El Hierro in the Canary Islands acts as the canvas to an expansive artwork by local Spanish land artist Jorge Rodriguez Gerada.

While complementing the rocky, undulating landscape created by frozen lava fields, the artwork is designed to work with and respect the island’s natural environment. The rich hues of the Burberry Check are created using milk-based paints that fade away with wind or water – leaving no trace – and have been approved and monitored by El Hierro’s Environmental Department. The unique installation honours our heritage whilst demonstrating our commitment to pursuing responsible practices for our future.

    Betty’s Landing Place
A meadow in South Africa’s Cape Overberg region blooms with the pattern of our signature emblem. Paying homage to pioneering aviator Betty Kirby-Green’s record-breaking flight from Clapham to Cape Town in 1937 – alongside co-pilot Flying Officer Arthur Clouston in a plane called The Burberry.

Hand-planted by local greenkeepers, the Burberry Check meadow features a variety of hardy flora chosen under the guidance of biodiversity experts, with African Daisies and honey-scented Helichrysum Petiolare attracting birds and pollinating insects. Grown and nurtured from seed to flower using water solely sourced from rainfall, the installation captures our dedication to protect, restore and regenerate nature.

    Words by Wilson Oryema, FRSA

‘An oasis in the depths of space

Our planet is filled with life and possibility

This vast and shimmering blue jewel

Where seasons and lifetimes pass by

    In a soothing downpour

Much has been swept into the sands of time

But all is stored in the memory of our cosmic mind

As though the sky reached out to touch the seas

With hopes to form a masterpiece

    This volcanic island

Is rooted in the endless sea

    Every ridge

    Every curve

    Bares countless tales

Each a part of the earth’s tapestry

    Weaving a path to

    The possibilities beyond the horizon

    Within this celestial garden

There is more to be discovered

Nestled in the cradle of the western cape

Where the blue cranes and fish eagles

    Are known to flock

Where jagged sandstone lies beneath mountains of burnt ochre

Where the fertile soil is a feast for the senses

The sights and scents lovingly whisper

    Welcome home

    The prospering fauna

The musky aroma of a nourished earth

Leave an imprint on the soul

Of a skyline in sweet embrace’
